One of the top rising free agents of the NCAA is getting a lot of attention from NHL clubs, with three of the frontrunners being the Jets, Penguins, and Oilers. Now that the trade deadline has passed, NHL teams are turning their attention to the college ranks for roster help. One of the more unexpected names to be in the mix is Cornell's Dalton Bancroft. Bancroft has recorded 15 goals and 11 assists for 26 points in 34 games this season, a bit of a drop-off from last season's 31-point effort (12G, 19A). That combination of size and ability still has him in the running, however. Bancroft measures 6-foot-3 and 207 pounds, the build of a power forward, something most NHL franchises would do anything to have.
As many as five teams are interested in Bancroft
As many as five teams, the Penguins, Oilers, Jets, Bruins, and Lightning, have expressed interest in inking the undrafted free agent, an RG source indicates. He's got that rare power-forward package that so many teams covet these days, the source told RG. He's big; he's not afraid to drive to the net or dig deep in the corners, and he can skate. When he's playing that north-south game to perfection, he's really hard to stop.

Though he is not considered one of the premier college free agents, Bancroft's playing style translates well, making him a curious choice. Another Frozen Four outing could continue to drive up his value. Cornell's challenging first-round opponent is No. 2 seed Michigan State. A deep tournament run, particularly if Bancroft spearheads it, can cement his NHL aspirations. At 24, teams wonder if his game can be elevated to the next level, and with power forwards in demand, Bancroft may find himself with an NHL contract within not too long a time.
