NHL insider Jonas Siegel has revealed the Leafs are targeting multiple defensemen, and Jets' Luke Schenn would be way more affordable than Flames' Rasmus Andersson.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have been navigating the trade deadline for years, and The Athletic's Jonas Siegel made it clear that every blue-line fix comes with a cost.
With injuries piling up and Chris Tanev's status uncertain, the need for a right-shot defender is obvious.

Flames' Rasmus Andersson is an ideal fit, but the cost will be high

Siegel identified Rasmus Andersson as the ideal fit-a true top-pair defender who can move the puck, kill penalties, and add offense from the back end. He could slide alongside Jake McCabe and let Morgan Rielly play in a more natural role.
The problem is the price. Any deal would likely require Toronto's top prospects, such as Easton Cowan and Ben Danford, plus premium picks.
Andersson would also need a new contract, potentially $8-9 million a year, which is risky for a player turning 30 in a Toronto market already heavy on blue-line salaries.

Jets' Luke Schenn is the much more affordable option

Luke Schenn offers a cheaper, shorter-term solution. At 36, his season hasn't been perfect, but his $2.75 million contract expires after the year, keeping risk low.
Siegel's projection for Schenn is far more manageable-a mid-to-late pick instead of top prospects. While he won't transform Toronto's defense, he provides a reliable NHL option and could regain some chemistry with Rielly.
In 30 games with the Winnipeg Jets this season, Schenn has one goal, five points, a -4 rating, 35 blocked shots, and 88 hits, giving the Maple Leafs a sturdier option without jeopardizing the future.
