Jets' Mark Scheifele was initially left off the Team Canada Olympic roster, and he and several others have been advised that they are now on the reserve list.

When Team Canada unveiled its Olympic roster for the Olympic Games in 2026 on December 31st, they also revealed a list of reserves, but very little information was given.
New information has come out in order to shed light on the 'hidden' list of reserves. According to NHL insider Pierre LeBrun, the list is far smaller than the theoretical 60-plus players that could be drawn from the IOC's original 90+ longlist.

What the reserve players are now required to do

Team Canada has reduced it to 15 players, all of whom have agreed to be included in the drug-testing program of the IOC and are ready to join if required.
Re Team Canada: "Fifteen players have been told that they're on the reserve list; the forwards...some pretty obvious names; Sam Bennett, Connor Bedard, Mark Scheifele, Wyatt Johnston; the 4 Nations players that were not brought back."

- Pierre LeBrun
This reserve list provides an element of flexibility. It is possible that injuries or bouts of hot and cold play could end up determining who gets a chance to play and receive more ice time.

Some of the players added to Team Canada's reserve list

The prospective players that have been named in this category include forwards such as Sam Bennett, Connor Bedard, Wyatt Johnston, Mark Scheifele, Seth Jarvis, and Travis Konecny.
The strategy that Team Canada has adopted allows for adaptability even before announcing who will form the core team. Although Team Canada has made their roster public, this reserve team could be essential in Italy.
With players like Scheifele and Bedard ready to step in, Canada has options to respond to unexpected challenges, keeping the team competitive throughout the Olympics.
