Oilers insider Bob Stauffer believes Edmonton needs to seriously consider acquiring Kiefer Sherwood of the Canucks by the trade deadline for a deep playoff run. Oilers Now podcaster Bob Stauffer has floated an interesting proposition with respect to Edmonton potentially targeting Vancouver Canucks powerful forward Kiefer Sherwood should he become available in the market this season or next summer.
Bob Stauffer prefers Kiefer Sherwood over Corey Perry and Evander Kane
On Wednesday's episode, Stauffer was asked about the Oilers potentially entertaining former players such as Corey Perry or Evander Kane at the 2026 trade deadline. Rather, the host proposed that Edmonton may decide to go after a different kind of player. Sherwood is one who currently has an expiring contract for $1.5 million. There's a different pending UFA in Vancouver that I would look at that might be a better situational fit for what Edmonton needs, Stauffer said of Sherwood, at first only hinting at the player's identity, saying, We're probably talking a third line forward, a second slash third line forward, a middle sixth player. Who would you go grab? Because there is a guy I think that would be a pretty good fit. There will be teams lined up to trade for him. He made over 450 hits last year, 19 goals. He was a major pain in the ass for Vancouver when they played Nashville (Sherwood's team at that time) in the playoffs a couple years ago. Represented by (Connor McDavid's agent) Judd Moldaver. I'm sure the Canucks open up the vault to get the guys signed. I'm sure. But if they don't, there will be lots of good teams interested in him. For the record, Stauffer was only hypothesizing. That being said, when the most connected voice in the Oilers' camp dangles out a name, it is deserving of attention. Now 30, Sherwood has developed into a physical, efficient NHLer, one of the leaders in even-strength points-per-60 and hits-per-60 in the league last year, before big-name players such as Tom Wilson, Sam Bennett, and the Tkachuk brothers. Oilers fans saw what he has to offer in the last game, where he scored twice against them.

Loading from Twitter ...

For Sherwood to be available on the market, however, the Canucks would either need to miss the playoffs or not offer him an extension, highly unlikely with Thatcher Demko playing the way he has and Sherwood experiencing such breakout success. Nonetheless, it would appear to be an applicable fit: a rugged, gifted winger with bite and scoring to complement. Regardless of whether it becomes a rental situation or an extended term, it's the type of player Edmonton likes to pursue in the final days before the trade deadline, someone who can contribute in the short term but stay on if chemistry develops. In any case, it's purely speculative at this point, but it's definitely something that should remain on the radar in terms of solutions to improve the Oilers' depth up front.
