When the NHL began in 1917, there were 22 games in the season. From 1918 to 1974, there were several changes to the regular season format.

The league went from 18 games in 1918, to 24, 30, 36, 44, 48, 50, 60, 70, 74, 76 and 78 games during this period. It was in the 1974-75 season that the NHL went to 80 games.
In 1995-96, the NHL went to 82 games per season and that is still the current format. Of course, lockouts and the pandemic have shortened some of these campaigns, but we can say that it has been quite stable for over 20 years.
Now the NHL wants to lengthen the seasons again, and is considering making it 84 games.
