Elliotte Friedman provides latest update on contract talks between the Canucks and Kiefer Sherwood

The Vancouver Canucks have had a turbulent season that included a trade sending away captain Quinn Hughes and an organizational commitment to a re-tool.

With Patrik Allvin and Jim Rutherford shuffling around the roster many expected pending free agent Kiefer Sherwood to be on the move before the trade deadline.

To this point, the two sides had been far apart in contract negotiations making a trade even more likely.

However, a new report from insider Elliotte Friedman has suggested that the Canucks have circled back with a new offer for Sherwood starting talks again.

During a segment on Saturday Headlines NHL insider Elliotte Friedman spoke about Sherwood's future in Vancouver.

Friedman confirmed the two sides were speaking again but that a sizeable gap remains between the Canucks and Sherwood's demands.

At this point, the exact terms each side are offering is unclear but it is safe to assume that Sherwood would like a long-term deal which the Canucks might not be comfortable giving.

Some Canucks fans have pointed out that the team circling back on Sherwood could mean a trade is on the horizon as Allvin and Rutherford went through a similar process with Bo Horvat and Tyler Motte before moving them.

If the two sides do not close the gap in negotiations over the next couple of weeks expect trade talks involving Sherwood to ramp up significantly.
