NHL insider Murat Ates delved into whether the struggling Winnipeg Jets will turn a corner and become buyers or whether they will sell at the trade deadline.
The Winnipeg Jets are at a fork in the road as the trade window closes in. Should GM Kevin Cheveldayoff pull the trigger to improve their playoff odds or start moving pending UFAs?
A year ago, the Jets were leading the league, cruising toward the Presidents' Trophy for the first time in franchise history.
Now they're at the bottom of the standings, with only six wins since November 11 and seven points shy of a wild-card berth. Without bold moves, their playoff chances could fade fast.
What the Jets need to do if they want to make the playoffs
And, even in the wake of all these recent wins, secondary scoring has been the Jets' biggest longstanding hurdle this season. According to Paul Friesen of The Winnipeg Sun, Cheveldayoff needs to act soon to change the tide.
He pointed to last year's Blues, who rode midseason deals to climb from near the cellar to playoff contention.
Why another insider is not feeling too much optimism
Murat Ates, an insider of the Jets, predicts the team will be sellers. If the Jets do opt to sell by the March 6 deadline, Ates predicts Cheveldayoff will look toward targeting veteran UFAs who can become rentals in the form of Jonathan Toews, Gustav Nyquist, Tanner Pearson, and trade those players for draft picks and prospects.

Logan Stanley could be a focal point. The 27-year-old defenseman is having a career year with seven goals. Cheveldayoff may deal him while his value is high, though re-signing him does remain on the table.
The course of action the Jets take next will tell whether they push for a playoff spot or pivot to rebuilding, with the team's roster and trade plans under serious scrutiny.
