Boston Bruins insider Jim Matheson reported today that the team will be heavily pursuing Leon Draisaitl in the offseason. However, a trade for the Oilers superstar could prove to be extremely difficult.

The report comes after rumors earlier in the season suggested that the Edmonton Oilers might actually consider trading Draisaitl. Those rumors ultimately quieted down quickly after the Oilers got their season back on track. However, it took the team firing head coach Jay Woodcroft in order to get the season back on track.

Jim Matheson believes that the Boston Bruins would «move heaven and earth» to bring in Leon Draisaitl if he becomes available by any means.

Matheson himself qualified his statement by noting that the Oilers and Draisaitl appear to be looking to come to a contract agreement over the summer.

Matheson also makes it clear though, that he believes Draisaitl wants to remain in Edmonton and will sign a contract extension.

Oilers face tough contract negotiations with Draisaitl, McDavid

That being said, the Oilers are in a tricky situation when it comes to their cap. Draisaitl will be entering a contract year next season and McDavid will follow suit in the 2025-26 season. With Draisaitl currently making just 8.5 million dollars against the cap, he is due a huge raise that will kick in during McDavid's final year at his 12.5 million dollar cap hit.

The Edmonton Oilers are facing a looming decision with Leon Draisaitl's contract extension as his performance impacts negotiations. Darren Dreger believes the numbers could price Draisaitl out of what the Oilers can afford.

Given his level of play, Draisaitl will likely be asking for around what McDavid makes now. Of course, McDavid will also be due a big raise so the two players combined could be making nearly 30 million dollars against the cap in a couple year's time. While the salary cap is projected to continue increasing, the Oilers could be the first team with two players making such a high proportion of the cap. We will just have to see what path the team takes with their star players and whether or not it will lead to Stanley Cups in Edmonton.
