Devils GM Tom Fitzgerald clarified one key aspect regarding trade talks with Vancouver for Quinn Hughes, and no-trade clauses did not affect things.
The New Jersey Devils faced Quinn Hughes on Monday night for the first time since missing out on acquiring him.
Speculation suggested the Devils couldn't fit Hughes under the salary cap due to multiple no-trade clauses on the roster, but GM Tom Fitzgerald insists that's not true.
On Wednesday, Fitzgerald held an unscheduled press conference where he addressed a wide range of topics, including his own job security, Sheldon Keefe's status, Dougie Hamilton's drama, Jacob Markstrom's extension, and accountability for the season.
The session was thorough, and local media pushed him on many issues. Most fans wanted clarity on the Quinn Hughes situation.
With brothers Jack and Luke Hughes already in New Jersey, many believed the Devils were the front-runner to acquire Quinn.
What Tom Fitzgerald said about all of the no-movement clauses
Rumors even suggested they had the first opportunity to make a deal. Fitzgerald made it clear that no-trade clauses did not prevent the acquisition.
"No-movement clauses did not get in the way of a Quinn Hughes trade."

Hughes has been playing at an elite level for the Minnesota Wild, a team that looks poised for a Stanley Cup run.
Minnesota's trade for Hughes involved giving up top prospect Zeev Buium, young center Marco Rossi, former first-round pick Liam Ohgren, and another first-round pick, essentially four first-round assets.
Matching that haul would have been difficult for the Devils. While many believe adding Hughes could have pushed the Devils into a playoff position, the GM offered no additional details beyond his remarks.
"I don't want to speculate how close we came. Of course we were interested in Quinn Hughes's services. But I can't speculate on what they got or what they wanted from us."

The full story behind the trade may remain unclear, but fans at least heard it directly from the top.
