NHL insider David Pagnotta revealed that the Oilers have held trade talks for Andrew Mangiapane with their Canadian rivals, the Ottawa Senators.

On last week's edition of Hello Hockey, David Pagnotta from the Fourth Period broke the news that the Ottawa Senators and Edmonton Oilers have had trade discussions centered on Andrew Mangiapane.
There was no indication as to the extent of the discussions. Mangiapane seems set for a trade this season.
In late December, Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet reported that the Oilers were looking for a way to alleviate their crowded forward ranks.

What Elliotte Friedman said about Andrew Mangiapane last month

Later, he said that Mangiapane was looking for a better opportunity and that the Anaheim Ducks, Detroit Red Wings, and Winnipeg Jets have all reached out to varying extents.
For Ottawa, a swap involving Mangiapane would be complicated. The Senators are six points away from a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, with five teams between them and the final wild-card spot.
They have not been playing well, as they have a 3-6-1 record over their last 10 games, which is the worst record in the Atlantic Division.
There are some questions concerning Mangiapane's recent output. In total, he has 19 goals and 39 points in 123 games with the Oilers and Washington Capitals over the last two years.
In comparison, he had 14 goals and 40 points in 75 games in the final season with the Calgary Flames.
Ottawa, averaging 3.11 goals a game with coach Travis Green, could certainly use some more scoring, although problems in the defensive end have been a bigger issue.
On the defensive side of the puck, Mangiapane has fared well in Washington in his first season with them last year, recording an impressive on-ice save percentage of 91.8%.

Why Andrew Mangiapane isn't having the same defensive success in Edmonton

This season in Edmonton, however, his save percentage is at a mere 83.7%, which is the worst on the team among players who have played
Ottawa may choose to target Mangiapane for his play on defense, in which case it would be up to the Senators' coaching staff to help Mangiapane get back to last year's level of play.
As for secondary scoring, there are likely more talented players for less money than Mangiapane.
