Tonight, a new report has set a hard deadline for a trade involving Darnell Nurse which could lead Stan Bowman to have to make a worse deal for the veteran defenseman.

The Edmonton Oilers are coming off of an incredibly disappointing season in which they exited the Stanley Cup Playoffs in the first round.
One of the players most scrutinized during the playoff run this season was veteran defenseman Darnell Nurse.
Nurse in the past has struggled to be consistent especially in the defensive end of the rink and his flaws were on full display in the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs.
As a result, reports indicated the Oilers are looking to move on from Nurse via trade and have been discussing the potential move with teams from around the league.
Now, a previously overlooked clause in Nurse's contract has put pressure on Bowman to get a deal done before NHL free agency opens on July 1st.

New report shines light on contract clause which could impact Darnell Nurse trade

According to multiple sources, Darnell Nurse is owed a roster bonus on July 1st of 2026 that will cost his team 6 million dollars.
Bowman is being backed into a corner here, at some point he's gonna have to lose a Nurse trade or stomach keeping him. If July 1st comes & he is still an Oiler, that could be a catastrophic failure for them.
If the bonus is paid out by the Oilers it will impact their salary cap for the upcoming season and make bringing in impact players significantly more difficult for Stan Bowman and the front office.
With Nurse and the Oilers clearly wanting a separation, Bowman's full focus should be on moving Nurse before July 1st so the Oilers can have a clean slate.
This could mean lowering his asking price and making a trade that could look more like giving away Nurse for nothing compared to fair value.
As the July 1st deadline approaches, it will be interesting to see what the Oilers and Stan Bowman plan to do and how Nurse's contract will impact their overall plans.
