The NHL offseason is in full swing the Los Angeles Kings have reportedly decided to move on from franchise icon Drew Doughty after this season.
The Los Angeles Kings have been perennial Stanley Cup Playoff contenders for almost the two decades.
With the retirement of captain Anze Kopitar, the Kings will enter a new era for their franchise and now seem ready to potentially reset their core group.
According to multiple reports, this upcoming season will be the last for defenseman Drew Doughty in Los Angeles.
Los Angeles Kings make a plan to part ways with Drew Doughty
According to Kings reporter Zach Dooley, Los Angeles is highly unlikely to offer Doughty an extension beyond this season.
Ken Holland shared that the Kings and Drew Doughty will likely not agree to an extension this summer.
As of now, the Kings would prefer Doughty to retire after this season to finish his career entirely as a King but it remains unclear whether he is willing to do that.
The two sides would both like Doughty to finish his career in Los Angeles but they're more likely to assess that after the 2026-27 season.
Doughty, 36, is nearing the end of his illustrious and future Hall of Fame career but he could look to hang on and chase another Stanley Cup with a different organization.
Now, the two sides will have to explore Doughty's plans for his career beyond this upcoming season.
If Doughty wants to continue playing, then a sign and trade next offseason seems to be the most likely scenario.
As more information is provided on Doughty's future in Los Angeles and beyond we will pass that news along to you.
