An Angus Reid Institute poll was released that showed which current Canadian team in the playoffs has the most support, and the results are quite shocking. Supporting the 4 Nations Face-Off in February was easy for Canadian fans, as the maple leaf was on their national jersey, and a long-standing rivalry with the U.S. guaranteed a great event. But to make Flames fans root for the Oilers, or Habs fans root for the Leafs? That's a different story. Maybe we can get the Jets and Sens to exchange pleasantries? However, after 32 years since the last Canadian Stanley Cup winner, a new generation of national unity may be changing that. New survey results from the Angus Reid Institute show growing numbers of Canadian hockey fans cheering on any Canadian team in the playoffs, if not their own.
More fans are starting to cheer for other Canadian teams if their favorite team is eliminated
Seventy-one per cent now say they'll cheer for any homegrown team, up seven points over last year and 14 points since 2016.

Loading from Twitter ...

Canadians still have favorites, though. And with Edmonton, Winnipeg, Toronto, Ottawa, and Montreal all competing, the Maple Leafs and Canadiens lead the charge, each gathering backing from approximately 30% of supporters. Eighteen percent are supporting the Oilers, 15 percent the Jets, and just six percent the Senators. And as for which team Canadians think will actually put an end to the Cup drought, the Leafs and Jets are tied with one-in-five choosing them. Fewer predict the Oilers (16%) or Canadiens (14%). And just two per cent of Canadians think a Canadian team will never win again, down from five per cent in 2021.
