The Jets are officially the NHL's oldest team, and before anyone panics or complains, it is actually a good thing, as experience is key during the playoffs.

There are numerous means of leading the NHL, but age is rarely one of them. But as the 2025-26 season gets underway, the Winnipeg Jets hold the distinction of being the league's oldest team, even more ancient than the Penguins, Capitals, and Panthers.
Last season's President's Trophy-winning team was already an older bunch, and they just became older heading into this year.
The young forwards' recall of Parker Ford and Nikita Chibrikov did help lower the age to an extent, but the offseason pickups of 37-year-olds Jonathan Toews, Tanner Pearson, and Gustav Nyquist raised the team's average age to close to 30.
The Jets lead the league with an average age of 29.73. It is Montreal that occupies the last position with an average of just 25.27, with a mere four teams averaging older than the 29-year mark.
"As it currently stands, the Jets are the No. 1 team in terms of age, with an average age of 29.73 years. Montreal is the youngest at 25.27 years of age. Only four other clubs see averages begin with the digits 29."

The Jets Also Have the 2nd Most Games of NHL Experience on Their Roster

But experience comes with age, and the Jets have plenty of it. Together, their roster has 13,112 games of NHL experience, second only in the league to last year's back-to-back champion Florida Panthers.
That's a long way from rebuilding clubs such as Montreal and Buffalo, who are both floating in the 6,000-game neighborhood.
With so much mileage on their odometers, Winnipeg is betting heavily on old-school play to take them places this season.
Off last season's second-round elimination, they've constructed a roster in the image of Paul Maurice's grizzled Panthers, betting that experience and street smarts will finally reward the franchise with its first Stanley Cup.
Whether or not that more experienced, steadier Jets roster can parlay that experience into success come April remains to be seen, but they're certainly constructed to try, and they are more than happy to use this secret weapon to their advantage.
