The Jets' opening night roster projection has just gotten more complicated, as Dylan Samberg is dealing with an injury, which could change the team's look.

Dylan Samberg endured what coach Scott Arniel described as a "freak accident" Saturday during the preseason game against Calgary, and the Winnipeg Jets are left to consider whether they will begin the season without their best stay-at-home defenceman.
The damage was done close to the Flames' bench when Samberg seemed to accidentally hit a stanchion on the left arm of his body. He left the ice immediately on his own but did not come back.
The Calgary check by Ryan Lomberg was not penalized and did not seem intentional, yet the consequences are severe.
Arniel also spoke about the depth of Winnipeg at defense, saying Samberg would be assessed further.

Despite the Jets Waiving 4 Players, They Still Have Quite a Large Roster at This Point in Camp

The Jets waived four from camp: goalie Isaac Poulter, forwards Jacob Julien and Fabian Wagner, and defenceman Dylan Anhorn, who had his PTO terminated, but kept a roster larger than planned, maybe foreseeing reinforcement needs.
Samberg's likely absence leaves a monster hole. He eats tough minutes against top forwards, is the penalty-kill specialist, and was a gem last season as a pairing partner to Neal Pionk.
Winnipeg outscored foes 36-21 five-on-five with that pair, but was outscored 9-5 when Pionk was paired with Haydn Fleury. The disparity speaks volumes about Samberg's position in the lineup.
If he is unable to play, the Jets will search internally. Fleury, Logan Stanley, Ville Heinola, Colin Miller, or even promising prospect Elias Salomonsson are all able to vie for greater responsibility.
For some, it may be what prevents them from being sent down and includes them on the opening-night roster.
While the Jets wait to hear on Samberg's status, their blueline is already showing early adversity, and an early chance for someone to fill a bigger role.
