In a new interview Winnipeg Jets forward Morgan Barron discussed the potential for him to take on a big role with the Jets this upcoming season. This summer the Winnipeg Jets lost several key free agents including Nikolaj Ehlers who signed with the Detroit Red Wings. The Jets brought in Jonathan Toews and Gustav Nyquist to help fill some of the losses they took but both players are aging and have a history of injury problems. With the Jets in serious need of reliable middle-six forwards the upgrades will likely have to come from within as players step up into bigger roles. Earlier this month, GM Kevin Cheveldayoff revealed that the team expects to rely much more heavily on top prospect Brad Lambert.

Loading from Twitter ...

This evening, Jets veteran Morgan Barron spoke to the media and admitted he is hoping to take a big step forward and be a crucial piece of the lineup next season.
Morgan Barron Opens Up About Potential New Role For The Upcoming Season
During a recent interview for NHL.com Barron opened up about his contract extension and expectations for next season. First, in regard to the new contract, Barron admits he's excited the process is over and is excited to getting back to focusing on hockey. Obviously it's a process that I think everyone goes through, but to get it worked out and kind of be able to get back to looking forward to the season, have that kind of front of mind is great. When it comes to the on-ice, Barron spoke about the potential opportunity to play center to begin the season with captain Adam Lowry out due to injury. Yeah, I've talked to Arnie and the other coaches about that a little bit as summer goes. So, I think it's a fluid situation. I did enjoy kind of playing in that spot, and they know that. So yeah, there's always moving pieces. Obviously, Lows is going to miss a little bit of time, it sounds like. But there's always guys coming in and out and then things changing. So, for me, that's kind of something I've tried to have in my tool bag as much as possible is that flexibility and being able to play any position. As for the steps Barron is hoping to take forward next season he revealed he wants to become a more dangerous offensive threat while still being able to be a reliable defensive player like in years past. I think for me, it's continuing to be someone who can be relied on defensively and trying to take that next step and continue to produce and take that to another level offensively Last season, Barron played 74 games and tallied 15 points which will need to take a significant jump if he is going to be relied on to play on a scoring line. As training camp gets underway all eyes will be on Barron to see if Scott Arniel gives him the opportunity to play center or if he will go back to being a reliable bottom-six winger once again.
