This evening, a report from NHL insider Chris Johnston has provided clarity on the favorite to land Connor McDavid if he ends up in free agency. Connor McDavid became eligible to sign a long-term extension with the Edmonton Oilers when free agency opened on July 1st. Despite being nearly at the end of July already Connor McDavid has yet to sign an extension with the Oilers and is still set to head into the final year of his contract. To this point, reports had indicated that McDavid was still likely to re-sign in Edmonton after his busy summer full of off-ice activities concludes. Tonight, Chris Johnston gave his latest update on who he believes McDavid will ultimately sign with.
NHL Insider Remains Confident Connor McDavid Will Re-Sign In Edmonton
In a new appearance Johnston was asked who he believes could be in on McDavid if the Oilers' superstar makes it to free agency. Johnston revealed that several of the top teams in the NHL would likely position themselves to take a run at McDavid.

Loading from Twitter ...

Johnston then admitted that even if McDavid plays out this season without an extension a long-term solution in Edmonton is still the most likely outcome overall. I don't really know. It's too soon to say or to handicap who's the most likely to sign him or anything like that. Again, probably the most likely is Edmonton frankly to re-sign Connor McDavid if we're being clear here - Chris Johnston Stan Bowman and the Edmonton Oilers still have plenty of time to re-sign McDavid before opening night but the long this situation remains unresolved the more speculation will continue to build.
