Two big extensions have been handed out to defenseman this summer, and now, one Insider has revealed the effect it may have on Quinn Hughes. This off-season has been full of big time news around the National Hockey League, and in the past week, we've seen two massive extensions given out to young, promising blue liners. In that time, both Jackson Lacombe and Luke Hughes have signed deals worth $9 million annually, with many now looking to the likes of Lane Hutson and Thomas Harley for comparables.
Could Quinn Hughes Break $15 Million Annually?
One player that it may effect the most is Vancouver Canucks captain Quinn Hughes, a player that's clearly among the top-10 in the entire league, and with free agency looming in 2027, he could be up for a massive deal. So big in fact that NHL Insider Jeff Marek suggested that Hughes could go well beyond $15 million a year on his next deal as a result of two talented but unproven players getting $9 million a season. If Luke Hughes and Jackson LaCombe get $9 million a year, is Quinn [Hughes] getting $20 million a year? The cascading effect, like everything is joined right and then whatever Hutson signs for, it's going to affect Bill Guerin in Minnesota with what he has to do with Zeev Buium. Nothing exists in isolation here with any of these contracts. All these contracts cascade to everybody around the NHL and for the purposes of this show, yeah, it's going to affect Quinn Hughes too.

Loading from Twitter ...

Simply put, beyond Cale Makar, there is no player on the blue line near Hughes' level in the NHL right now, and with Kirill Kaprizov signing a historic deal, it's safe to say that many expect Hughes to land a similar deal. Whether that's in Vancouver or not, only time will tell, but with the salary cap continuing to rise, don't be shocked to see Hughes' new deal go beyond $15 million as his 2027 free agency approaches.
