The Oilers have lost Noah Philp to the Hurricanes, as he was claimed off waivers by Carolina, which was revealed today by insider Elliotte Friedman.

The Carolina Hurricanes have claimed center Noah Philp off waivers from the Edmonton Oilers, according to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman.
Philp's arrival leaves Carolina needing to make a roster move, as the Hurricanes are currently carrying the maximum 23 players on their active roster. The claim was not entirely unexpected.

What Elliotte Friedman said earlier today about interest in Noah Philp

From Edmonton's standpoint, it would have been easier to move Philp via trade after he cleared waivers, since he would not have needed to go through waivers again for some time if assigned to the AHL.
Because the Hurricanes claimed him, Philp would have to pass through waivers again if Carolina attempts to send him to the Chicago Wolves.
For now, Philp gets a fresh opportunity, though his immediate role is uncertain. Seth Jarvis is the only Hurricanes forward currently injured, and Philp is unlikely to factor into a top-line spot.
If he earns a consistent role, it could come at the expense of Jesperi Kotkaniemi or Mark Jankowski, both of whom have struggled this season.
Philp has limited NHL production, recording two goals and five points in 30 games with Edmonton. Still, his size and AHL track record likely appealed to Carolina.
Despite briefly stepping away during the 2023-24 season, Philp has posted 38 goals and 72 points in 130 AHL games.

The Penguins are retaining Danton Heinen in their organization

Elsewhere, all other players recently placed on waivers cleared, including Oilers forward David Tomasek, who is returning to Europe. No new players were waived today.
Yesterday's waiver activity included Pittsburgh's Danton Heinen, Toronto's Marshall Rifai, Calgary's Juuso Valimaki, and New York Islanders defenseman Ethan Bear, underscoring the continued roster shuffling around the league.
