Oilers could explore trade of second-line forward, Elliotte Friedman reports
NHL insider Elliotte Friedman revealed that the Oilers could be enticed to trade forward Andrew Mangiapane, but he would have to waive his no-trade clause.
As the Edmonton Oilers return to a healthier roster, the team is considering trimming a crowded forward group. On today's episode of 32 Thoughts, Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman reported that the Oilers are looking to move a forward via trade.
The top two players Elliotte Friedman listed could be traded by the Oilers
Friedman specifically identified Andrew Mangiapane and Noah Philp as potential candidates. Philp is currently on waivers, and there is interest in him, but only if he clears by this afternoon.
"Oilers could be looking to trade Mangiapane, he might be looking to waive his NMC for a team offering a bigger role."

If claimed, he would need to go through waivers again to be sent to the AHL. If acquired via trade after clearing, he would be exempt from waivers for a period of time.
The Oilers' roster is seeing more healthy bodies return. Zach Hyman is back after a long absence, Jack Roslovic was recently activated from injured reserve, and Kasperi Kapanen, currently on LTIR, is expected back soon.
Why a trade for one or two forwards could really help the Oilers
Moving one forward or two could open cap space for more impactful additions ahead of the trade deadline.
Mangiapane, who makes $3.6 million this season and next, is the sixth-highest-paid forward on the team. Edmonton brought him in last summer after a one-year stint with Washington, but he has not delivered the middle-six scoring they hoped for.
He has five goals and 11 points in 39 games this season, averaging 13:31 of ice time and a -16 rating.
Friedman compared Mangiapane's situation to how the Los Angeles Kings handled Phillip Danault, suggesting a mutual split could be coming. Mangiapane has a full no-trade clause, but he may be willing to waive it for a move to a better situation.
