The Calgary Flames organization has lost one of its greatest legends ever, as Guy Chouinard has sadly passed away at the age of 69.
Former NHL hockey player and longtime coach Guy Chouinard has passed away at the age of 69. The QMJHL confirmed this on Sunday night.
Chouinard is a Quebec City, Quebec, native who initially broke into the league as a forceful left winger with the Quebec Remparts, where he played between 1971 and 1974.
It did not take him long to establish himself as one of the league stars, which is why his number was retired by the Remparts in 2016 in recognition of this achievement. Chouinard was inducted into the QMJHL Hall of Fame in 2005.
The talented left winger went on to enjoy a fruitful career in the NHL, most prominently as part of the Atlanta/Calgary Flames.
Playing in the 1978-79 campaign, he scored 50 goals and 107 points, which remains one of the team's best attacking displays. He concluded his NHL tenure by registering 205 goals, 370 assists, and 575 points in 578 matches.
What Guy Chouinard accomplished with the Flames organization
Within the Flames' organization, he ranked 23rd in games played, 9th in points, 12th in goals, and 8th in assists, truly solidifying himself as a Flames legend.
After retiring his skates, Chouinard returned to the QMJHL as a coach from 1985 until 2010, capturing the President's Cup with the Longueuil Chevaliers in 1987.
Why Guy Chouinard will be remembered for more than his playing and coaching days
He is also remembered for more than his on-ice and coaching triumphs, having been the father of former first-round pick and current hockey executive Éric Chouinard.
On behalf of the entire staff, we extend our condolences to the Chouinard family, Guy's friends, and the hockey world.
