Ken Holland discusses his exit from the Oilers for the first time since heartbreaking Stanley Cup Finals loss
In a recent interview, former Edmonton Oilers GM Ken Holland spoke to the media and discussed how he felt after stepping down as the team's GM.
The Edmonton Oilers are coming off of back-to-back Stanley Cup Finals runs the first of which was orchestrated by legendary NHL executive Ken Holland.
Despite making the Stanley Cup Finals, Holland decided to part ways with the Oilers stepping down and essentially retiring from the game.
Just one season later, Holland decided to forgo retirement and returned to the NHL to become the General Manager of the Los Angeles Kings.
In a new interview with Scott Oake, Holland discussed what went into his decision to leave the Oilers and why he decided to return to run the Kings.
Ken Holland opens up about heartbreaking Oilers exit after Stanley Cup Finals run
During the interview with Oake,
I would have loved to have finished with a Stanley Cup championship there. Wherever you are, you want to win the Stanley Cup. Massively disappointing. Anytime you lose Game 7, losing it twice now, losing to Pittsburgh in '07, and then with Edmonton, it's tough.
After enduring the heartbreak, Holland knew his time with the Oilers was up and it was time for a new challenge.
Certainly I knew that would be the end of my time there
Now, Holland's focus is on improving the Los Angeles Kings and taking down his former franchise on the way to what he hopes is one more Stanley Cup championship.
You hope that one day it's going to make a difference, that you've been there, been there, been there, and you know what you need to do differently for a different result.
The Kings currently sit comfortably in a Stanley Cup Playoff spot and seem poised to improve upon their past seasons before Holland arrived in Los Angeles.
