The Oilers were reportedly considering waiving Calvin Pickard, according to NHL insider Frank Seravalli, but the players revolted and squashed the move.

What would it take for the Edmonton Oilers to mix things up in the goaltender position? Goalies like Stuart Skinner and Calvin Pickard have gotten off to sluggish starts, with save percentages under .900 and GAA's over 3.00.
This has led to mounting discontent among fans, who just want someone, anything, traded in, called up, or waived, in the hopes that the problem might be solved.

What the Oilers are doing before making any decisions

NHL insider Frank Seravalli reported that the Oilers are riding out the month with those two goaltenders. However, a lack of improvement could quickly see the end of this arrangement.
"I believe they've got until Christmas," Seravalli said. "I think Stan Bowman is gonna afford them a few week runway now that their schedule has normalized Their goalies, including Calvin Pickard, have a few weeks to straighten out their stats and their feel and get out of this crisis of confidence that has really marred this team in their own end to get back on track.

"And if it's not better by Christmas, I think that's when we're gonna start to see Stan Bowman begin to make something happen."
Pickard has had the most issues. In the last seven-game span, he has a 1-3-2 record with an .844 save percentage and a 4.31 GAA.
On their own, those stats would be cause for a change, and Seravalli wrote that Edmonton came close to calling up Connor Ingram from the Bakersfield farm team and placing Pickard on waivers in the process to send him down.
"I think the Oilers wanted to make a change with Calvin Pickard coming out of this road trip," Seravalli said. "I think they wanted to try and bring up Connor Ingram."

However, the connections Pickard has in the locker room have kept him in the lineup longer, as players quietly revolted to stand up for him.
"I think Calvin Pickard is such an immensely popular player in that Edmonton Oilers locker room that their top players went to bat for Calvin Pickard, and that's why they showed how much he means to them with their game in Tampa last week. That was the message that they wanted to deliver, we're going to play our wheels off for Calvin Pickard. And they did that. And that's why Calvin Pickard is sticking around, at least for the time being."

Why Calvin Pickard could still be a good option

The highlight of his play has been in last week's 2-1 overtime loss in Tampa Bay, where he made 33 saves with a .943 save percentage. While it was not a win, it was an indication he still has the ability to step up.
The return of the Oilers from their prolonged road schedule means that this moment has become critical. Skinner and Pickard need to step up their performance.
The window in which the team can improve is closing. Edmonton had better straighten out its goaltending situation soon, because a change may no longer be an option, but a necessity.
