NHL insider Nick Kypreos has linked the Edmonton Oilers to current St. Louis Blues and former Team Canada goaltender Jordan Binnington in a trade.

Sportsnet's Nick Kypreos has thrown out some interesting speculation: St. Louis Blues goalie Jordan Binnington may be on the trading block, and the Edmonton Oilers could be a possible destination.
"Binnington has one more season on his contract and the sense is he won't be part of any re-tool the Blues might undergo. The strongest speculation ties Binnington to Edmonton, and that the Oilers are also seeing if they can get a defenceman out of St. Louis at the same time. That potential deal would most likely be built around Stuart Skinner going back to St. Louis to team up with Hofer."

As of right now, it is speculation, but it fits with the ongoing chatter around Edmonton's growing frustration in net.

The biggest roadblock the Oilers face in acquiring Jordan Binnington

Insiders have suggested the Oilers might be motivated to make a move sooner rather than later, and Binnington's name keeps surfacing as a potential solution. The challenge? His contract.
Binnington carries a $6 million cap hit for this season and next, while Stuart Skinner is on an expiring $2.6 million deal. Any deal would likely require Edmonton to add a significant sweetener for St. Louis to retain salary.
It's difficult to know whether Kypreos has concrete intel or if he's merely connecting the logical dots. Regardless, the underlying logic checks out. Binnington has struggled this season on a Blues team attempting to get its footing.
He's posted a .880 save percentage through his first stretch of games, ranking 55th among the NHL's 67 regular goalies.

Why there is trade chatter swirling

Skinner hasn't been much better at .885, ranking 50th. If either netminder were performing at a high level, the trade rumours wouldn't be swirling.
There's still reason to believe in Binnington's upside, as he backstopped St. Louis to a Stanley Cup in 2019, starred for Team Canada in the Four Nations tournament, and has long been viewed as an Olympic roster lock.
Whether Edmonton makes a bold swing remains to be seen, but the pressure is rising, and the Binnington buzz isn't going away anytime soon.
