Tonight, a new report from Nick Kypreos of Sportsnet has linked the Edmonton Oilers to Jonathan Marchessault.

The Edmonton Oilers continue to search for forward depth after trading away Evander Kane and Viktor Arvidsson and losing Corey Perry in free agency.
The loss of Kane and Arvidsson severely depleted the Oilers forward group to gain the salary cap space needed to keep their core together.
Now, as the offseason rolls along, the Oilers are scouring the market for a suitable replacement that could provide depth scoring and veteran presence for the Oilers.
With free agent options mostly snatched up at this point the Oilers focus has shifted to the trade market where NHL analyst Nick Kypreos has suggested the Oilers target former Stanley Cup Champion Jonathan Marchessault.

Edmonton Oilers Linked To Jonathan Marchessault By NHL Analyst

Jonathan Marchessault has had a rough start to his tenure with the Nashville Predators.
Coming into the 2024-25 season Marchessault and fellow free agent signing Steven Stamkos were expected to carry the Preds back to the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Instead, Nashville struggled mightily and looks to be heading towards a potential rebuild.
According to sources, if a rebuild is on the horizon Marchessault could be one of the first big names traded.
If they have a chance to move one of their expensive, long-term contracts, Jonathan Marchessault would be the most likely. In the first year of his deal with Nashville, his goal total was cut in half from his last season in Vegas, dropping from 42 down to 21.

If Marchessault were to be moved this summer Nick Kypreos expects the Edmonton Oilers to be one of the favorites to land him.
There are several teams that have a need to add scoring into their top-six mix, including Ottawa, Toronto and Edmonton. The question would be if he'd lift his no-movement clause to go anywhere. Marchessault's contract runs another four seasons with a $5.5-million cap hit.

Even at 34 years old Marchessault put up respectable numbers despite dropping in goal totals with the struggling Predators amassing 56 points in 78 games.
If the Oilers believe Marchessault could re-discover his scoring touch with more talented player around him he could be a great bet this late in the offseason.
The problem in acquiring Marchessault will almost certainly be his contract as he enters the second season of a five year deal with an AAV of over 5 million dollars.
If the Oilers were to make a move for Marchessault they would need Nashville to heavily retain money which could drive up the asking price.
This potential move will come down to just how much Stan Bowman and the front office would be willing to bet on the aging Stanley Cup Champion to be the missing piece to playoff success.
