The Edmonton Oilers have made a surprising trade today, as NHL insider Elliotte Friedman reports Evander Kane is on the move to the Vancouver Canucks.

NHL insider Elliotte Friedman has revealed a big trade that has occurred today between the Edmonton Oilers and Vancouver Canucks involving Evander Kane. He will be going to a divisional rival in this unexpected move.
NHL insiders Rick Dhaliwal and Pierre LeBrun reported that three teams were in on Kane, who has been the subject of rumors lately, but it ended up being the Canucks who lucked out and will now benefit of his services.
Kane missed the entire season as he dealt with an injury and subsequent surgery, but he did return for the playoffs and was a solid factor. During Edmonton's run, he scored six goals and added six assists in 21 games, while dishing out a ton of hits.
The 6-foot-2 winger had scored 24 goals and 44 points in 77 games in 2023-24 and added four goals and eight points in the Oilers' run to the Stanley Cup Final that year.
Moving Kane clears up $5.13 million in cap space for the Oilers, who need to re-sign restricted free agent Evan Bouchard this summer and then need to seriously do whatever they can to sign Connor McDavid to an extension, too.
It doesn't appear that any salary was retained in the Kane trade, either.
In return, the Oilers are getting the Canucks 4th round pick that was originally that of the Ottawa Senators. This seems to be merely a salary dump for the Oilers.
Fans are no doubt looking forward to next year's matchup between these two teams.
