In a new interview, former Edmonton Oilers goaltender Devan Dubnyk analyzed how he would handle extension and potentially trade talks involving Stuart Skinner.

The Edmonton Oilers lack of consistent goaltending has been a point of emphasis for the organization and fans for over two years now.
In back-to-back Stanley Cup Finals Stuart Skinner has failed to show up when he was needed most leading to consecutive years of heartbreak.
Since the Stanley Cup Finals ended speculation regarding the Oilers' plans in goal have been at an all-time high.
Recently, the Oilers made their first big change hiring a new goaltending coach for next season.
Tonight, former Oilers goalie Devan Dubnyk revealed how he would move forward with Stuart Skinner who is heading into the final year of his current contract.

Former Oiler Devan Dubnyk Reveals How He Would Handle Stuart Skinner's Future

In a new article for Oilers Nation, Devan Dubnyk discussed the Oilers current situation involving Stuart Skinner.
Skinner is in the final year of his contract and has been mentioned countless times in trade rumors.
Despite the uncertainty around Skinner's play and his future Dubnyk would still prioritize extending Skinner but would not commit to him long term.
Dubnyk believes giving Skinner more money over a shorter-term would be the smartest move for Stan Bowman and the Oilers to make.
You're not handing out a long-term deal right now.

As good as he's been, Skinner's still in a bit of a 'prove it' phase. A one- or two-year extension max, just because the long-term confidence isn't fully there yet. But, he's a starting NHL goalie who's made back-to-back Finals, so you're looking at $5.5 to $6 million per year on a short-term deal.

If extension talks fall through between Skinner and the Oilers Dubnyk believes the club should keep him as a self rental unless they get a truly massive offer from another club.
Now, in terms of trade value, that's a different ball game. You don't move a 26-year-old starter unless you're absolutely certain about the guy coming back. If you're moving him, you're getting someone you believe in as your go-to guy, or else you're just starting over again.

This sentiment is one that seems to be shared by the Oilers organization who despite all of the trade rumors around Skinner have stuck with him and reportedly remain committed to him being their long-term starter.
With Connor McDavid and other key pieces still in need of an extension it will be interesting to see how long it takes for Stan Bowman and the Oilers to begin negotiations with Skinner and his agents.
