Friedman on Sportsnet Saturday Headlines floats a theory on Wayne Gretzky, Team Canada, and the Olympic final access mix-up.
The rumor was nasty: that Hockey Canada blocked Gretzky from reading the lineup before the gold medal game.
That kind of story lands hard in Canada, especially when emotions are already cooked.
According to Friedman, Gretzky reached out because he wanted it put to bed. He also said Hockey Canada treated him and his family well.
Friedman's version is almost painfully normal, an IOC security person at ice level did not recognize him, said no, and Gretzky simply left.
"There was a story this week about whether or not he was blocked by Hockey Canada to go in and read the lineup before the Gold Medal Game," Friedman said during his weekly Saturday Headlines segment. "He reached out, and I think he just wanted to put this to bed. I don't think he wants the story to continue. He said that he and his family were treated very well by Hockey Canada this week."
"But what he did say was that there was some kind of misunderstanding before the Gold Medal Game. He went down to ice level, and an IOC security person didn't recognize Wayne Gretzky and told him he couldn't be there, so he just left. I think, obviously, it's a sensitive time. I don't think he wanted Hockey Canada to be taking any heat that they didn't deserve to take."

If you believe that, it reframes the whole thing as bad logistics, not bad intent.
And it lines up with other reporting that there was never even a request for Gretzky to enter Team Canada's room in the first place.
The on-ice sting did not help, Canada lost 2-1 in overtime to the United States, so everyone went hunting for a villain afterward.
Wayne Gretzky and Team Canada deserved a cleaner moment
Canadian fans are exhausted by off-ice noise, they wanted the tournament to end with pride, not conspiracy clips.
This is the part people miss: major events run on credential lists, not legends and vibes.
The NHL world knows Gretzky on sight, but an Olympics floor guard is trained to say "no" first and ask questions later.
That is why Friedman's theory matters, it points the frustration at process, not people.
It is also a warning for the post-Olympics grind, the 2025-26 season is back in full sprint and every distraction steals oxygen from the stretch drive.
If Hockey Canada and the IOC tighten the access chain next time, this becomes a footnote instead of a weekly argument.
