The Oilers have been linked to Penguins' Tristan Jarry for weeks, and NHL insider Elliotte Friedman revealed today why a deal was not made between the two sides.

In recent days, rumors have swirled about the Edmonton Oilers moving closer to acquiring Tristan Jarry from the Pittsburgh Penguins.
NHL insider Elliotte Friedman, however, offered a reality check in his latest update, suggesting the situation is far from straightforward.

What the Oilers' strict operational model is

On the most recent 32 Thoughts episode, Friedman noted that while Edmonton is interested in Jarry, the Oilers operate on a strict dollar-in/dollar-out model. Pulling off a deal would require significant roster adjustments.
The initial idea was to pair Jarry with Stuart Skinner, but the trade has stalled because Pittsburgh isn't willing to retain any salary. Friedman called it a very difficult trade to execute at this time.
A one-for-one swap with Skinner won't satisfy Edmonton's plans. Ideally, the team would want both goalies sharing time, which only complicates matters further. With Jarry becoming a tougher fit, the Oilers may explore other options.
"Deal has died off because PIT won't retain on Jarry. Very hard trade to do right now."

Possible alternatives the Oilers may turn their attention to

Potential alternatives include Buffalo's Alex Lyon or Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen, or Columbus' Elvis Merzlikins, who hasn't secured a full-time starting role this season.
Another path could involve promoting Connor Ingram from the AHL's Bakersfield Condors, which would require moving Calvin Pickard and adjusting the cap, but could stabilize the crease without a blockbuster trade.
For now, Edmonton's chances of landing Jarry seem slim, meaning the team may need to get creative to address its goaltending situation.
