The Edmonton Oilers search for a goalie to pair with Stuart Skinner continues and today Vancouver Canucks goalie Kevin Lankinen has emerged as an option. The Edmonton Oilers are coming off of back-to-back Stanley Cup Finals runs in which their goaltending seemed to be the biggest flaw on the team. As a result, all summer long analysts and fans have been suggesting potential trades to give the Oilers an upgrade in goal. Despite these suggestions the Oilers and GM Stan Bowman have remained adamant that they will begin the season with Stuart Skinner and Calvin Pickard as their goalie duo. This has now led NHL analyst Jonathan Larivee to discuss a potential in-season trade for the Oilers to land goaltender Kevin Lankinen if goaltending remains an issue.
NHL Analyst Links The Edmonton Oilers To Canucks Goalie Kevin Lankinen
In a new article, Larivee discussed several options for the Oilers to target in season if Calvin Pickard or Stuart Skinner are underperforming. Larivee mentions Canucks goaltender Kevin Lankinen as an option if Vancouver is out of the Stanley Cup Playoff race and in selling mode. If the Canucks find themselves on the outside looking in again this season, it seems far more likely that they would be willing to move on from Lankinen than the aforementioned Demko. Whether or not Lankinen plays well enough this season to be considered a genuine upgrade over Pickard or Skinner however remains to be seen. Lankinen, 30, recently signed a long-term extension with the Canucks and is expected to serve as the backup to Thatcher Demko. Last season, in 51 games Lankinen had a 2.62 goals against average and a 0.902 save percentage which would make him one of the best backup goaltenders in the league. With Lankinen's track record of success he would likely be expensive on the trade market but could be a crucial upgrade for the Oilers. From the Canucks perspective, this deal only gets done if the team is clearly out of contention as Lankinen is a crucial safeguard for the injury prone Thatcher Demko. As the season gets underway it will be interesting to see if reports connecting Lankinen to the Oilers intensify or disappear completely.
