Today, Winnipeg Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff has received a major compliment from NHL analyst Mike Fink of The Hockey Writers ahead of the 2025-26 season.

The Winnipeg Jets have been one of the best teams in the NHL over the last five regular seasons.
Led by two time Vezina Trophy winner Connor Hellebuyck who is surrounded by big time talents like Mark Scheifele and Josh Morrissey as well as young star Cole Perfetti the Jets have been built to win in the short and long term.
Last season, things came together perfectly with the Jets winning the President's Trophy as the NHL's best regular season team.
Despite all of this sustained success, the Winnipeg Jets do not get the credit they deserve which is why GM Kevin Cheveldayoff has landed as the most underrated GM in the NHL according to Mike Fink of The Hockey Writers.

Kevin Cheveldayoff Crowned As The Most Underrated GM In The NHL

In his ranking of the most underrated General Managers Cheveldayoff ends up at number one for building a culture in Winnipeg that keeps star players wanting to stay with the Jets.
The Winnipeg Jets and their market are regarded as the opposite of a destination, a place that players avoid, and it's hard to bring in outside talent. The odds are stacked against the Jets, and there's always the lingering question about whether the team will give up and relocate (which happened in the 1990s). And every season, Cheveldayoff delivers.

Fink believes that Cheveldayoff stands out the most for the multitude of trades he has made to bring in top talented such as Gabriel Vilardi and Neal Pionk.
It's the trades that go a long way and allow him to stand out. Cheveldayoff keeps adding talent to an already great team to prevent them from falling off. From the Pierre-Luc Dubois trade that gave the Jets Gabriel Vilardi and Alex Iaffalo to the Jacob Trouba for Neal Pionk move, he brings in players to make the team better in the short and long term.

Even with all of these successes over the last five seasons, Fink believes that Cheveldayoff has his back against the wall once again after losing star forward Nikolaj Ehlers.
The odds are stacked against Cheveldayoff and the Jets again. They lost Nikolaj Ehlers in the offseason and must replace a key part of their top six. It's why many people are expecting a regression from this team, where they might miss the playoffs. However, it's hard to doubt Cheveldayoff, who will make the moves to get this team into the Cup conversation.

Heading into the 2025-26 season if the Winnipeg Jets can once again prove to be one of the best teams in the Western Conference Kevin Cheveldayoff should receive the praise he deserves and be a finalist for General Manager of the year.
