David Pagnotta reports Bobby McMann is being finalized in a trade, and Toronto's cheap 19-goal winger suddenly feels like deadline math, not patience.
Update: A last minute change has occurred and the Leafs decided to trade Bobby McMann to the Seattle Kraken.
McMann is 29, he is undrafted, and he is in year two of a two-year deal worth $2.7 million total with a $1.35 million cap hit. He can become a UFA on July 1.
No clause has been reported, and no retention detail is out yet. That matters because Toronto needs every dollar and every roster spot to stay flexible today.
What we know is that the other team appears to be the Avalanche.
This is the hard part of roster building. McMann has 19-13-32 in 60 games, so moving him is not about dead weight, it is about converting value before a contract squeeze hits.
On the ice, he gives you pace, straight-line pressure, and a net-drive game that fits a middle-six role. In plain terms, he helps a line get to the blue paint without needing power-play sugar.
Toronto is 27-25-11 after Thursday's 6-2 loss to the Rangers, so this move lands with urgency, not comfort. The Leafs are trying to reshape the mix, not just trim the edges.
Bobby McMann forces a Toronto Maple Leafs choice
Leafs fans will get why this hurts, because McMann is one of the few depth wingers here who actually plays heavy and finishes checks with purpose.
If this trade goes through any minute, Toronto likely believes the return, or the cap room it unlocks, helps the next move more than McMann helps Saturday's lineup.
That can mean a blue-line add, a different forward profile, or just cleaner deadline flexibility. It also means Craig Berube may need another winger to grab harder minutes right away.
McMann has outplayed his ticket. That is exactly why he is valuable enough to move, and exactly why this one will sting if the return comes in light.
The next milestone is simple now, finish the trade, see the full package, and judge whether Brad Treliving just sold smart or sold a little too fast.
