Emily Kaplan has the Minnesota Wild in on Chicago Blackhawks captain Nick Foligno, and that is deadline hockey with teeth.
Update: the trade is official and the return is below.
Nick Foligno is 38, a 2006 first-round pick by Ottawa, and a pending UFA with a $4.5 million cap hit. His deal runs through this season, and there is no known move protection tying Chicago's hands.
The post floating around says Minnesota is closing in.
That still matters because Foligno is not just another rental. He is a captain, a hard-wall winger, and the kind of voice coaches trust when games get nasty in April.
Minnesota is 36-16-10 and already hunting help for the stretch run. Bill Guerin has said he still wants to make the team better, and the Wild have already added Michael McCarron.
Foligno has only 3-8-11 in 37 games, so this would not be about pure offense. It would be about net-front work, board battles, second-unit man advantage grease, and playoff-caliber bite in the bottom six.
Nick Foligno would change Minnesota Wild texture
Wild fans would love the captain angle, and they would love the brother angle even more.
Marcus Foligno is already in that room, and a Nick Foligno arrival would hit the group like a jolt. It is easy to picture the Wild betting on identity as much as numbers here.
The cap question is the real snag. At $4.5 million, Chicago likely needs retention unless Minnesota ships money out, especially after earlier adds.
For the next game and the deadline, the fit is simple. Minnesota would be buying a captain from a non-playoff team to harden its middle-six wings and its room for one real push.
This will not be about flash. It will be about whether the Wild believe one captain can help drag them through the kind of series they have not finished often enough.
