As reported by MayorsManor, the Kings and coach D.J. Smith are securing Nikita Novikov in a unique AHL swap to add heavy defensive depth for the stretch run.

Novikov is a 22-year-old left-shot defender drafted in the 2021 sixth round by the Buffalo Sabres. He fits perfectly into the heavy, physical mold the Los Angeles management group aggressively targets.
He arrives on the final year of his entry-level deal, carrying an $855,000 cap hit at the NHL level and absolutely zero trade protection.
This Monday transaction immediately reinforces the defensive structure for the Ontario Reign. To finalize the temporary swap, Los Angeles loans 6-foot-7 forward Kaleb Lawrence to the Rochester Americans.
Lawrence produced six goals in 25 games during his rookie campaign, but was recently held scoreless over multiple stretches. He faced a heavily crowded bottom-6 depth chart.

Securing The Back End

Novikov brings pure size and mean physicality at 6-foot-4 to a roster already loaded with developing talent.
His crisp passing out of the defensive zone stands out on tape, facilitating fast and highly efficient zone exits.
Do not expect massive offensive output from the hulking Russian defender. His value lies strictly in preventing scoring chances.
Career-wise, his entire tactical game revolves around suffocating top opposing forwards along the half-wall.
The Reign currently hold first place in the Pacific Division and want to protect that valuable top seed at all costs. Earning home ice advantage is non-negotiable right now.
Stockpiling massive defensemen for the grueling Calder Cup playoffs is simply brilliant asset management by the front office. You can never have enough depth on the blue line when injuries inevitably strike.
Both NHL clubs retain the exclusive signing rights to their respective prospects throughout this unique development arrangement.
