Per Pierre LeBrun, Connor McDavid (29, 2015 1st overall, $12.5M AAV) could rethink his future if Kris Knoblauch oversees a first-round exit this spring.

Edmonton needs their defensive structure dialed. They must establish a physical presence to set the tone for this homestand.
Another early playoff flameout could alter the trajectory of this entire franchise.
LeBrun made it clear recently. He suggested the superstar might not wait until the summer of 2027 to formally evaluate his options.
If the Oilers get bounced in the opening round, everything changes. The front office will face a massive, franchise-altering crisis.
"If the Oilers flame out in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs this spring, I can't discount how [McDavid] will feel about that, about the team's ability to win, and about his place in it," claimed LeBrun. "The most likely scenario is waiting until the summer of '27 to revisit his future. But I can't dismiss what the disappointment of a first-round elimination might change."

We are talking about the ultimate competitor here. He demands crisp passing and solid execution every time he hops over the boards.
With a 31-25-8 record, the locker room knows the margin for error is gone.
One man cannot outscore a leaky blue line indefinitely. The defensive zone coverages have to tighten up immediately.

The Ticking Clock In Edmonton

McDavid wants a championship right now. He needs a roster that can deliver heavy minutes and a transition game that doesn't continually stall in the neutral zone.
The front office added a few depth pieces at the trade deadline. But the bottom six is frequently held scoreless when the physical checking gets tight.
They need controlled entries on the power play. Sluggish, dump-and-chase hockey simply wastes the clock and erases any offensive momentum.
Logging a -3 rating from your checking line in a massive Game 6 is exactly what chases a generational talent out of town.
Career-wise, McDavid has given the city of Edmonton absolutely everything. He has dragged flawed rosters deep into the postseason year after year.
Now the heavy pressure is squarely on the management group. They must prove they can build a legitimate Stanley Cup contender around him.
If they fail to deliver this spring, the best player in the Show will dictate his own exit on his own terms.
