NHL insider Elliotte Friedman has revealed that the Oilers have called about Alex Lyon's services, and are likely to do so again today before the roster freeze.

The Edmonton Oilers may be eyeing Buffalo Sabres' Alex Lyon again after Tristan Jarry left Thursday's game with an injury.
Lyon, 33, has become a reliable NHL goaltender over the past three seasons, starting with the Florida Panthers in 2022-23, then spending two years with the Detroit Red Wings before signing a two-year, $3 million deal with Buffalo this past offseason.
Even after acquiring Jarry from the Pittsburgh Penguins last week, the Oilers were reportedly considering Lyon as a potential replacement for Calvin Pickard, who has struggled this season with a 3.91 GAA and .857 save percentage in 12 appearances.

What happened to Tristan Jarry in last night's game

Jarry's injury occurred in just his third start with Edmonton when he appeared to tweak something on a cross-crease save in the second period and had to exit the game early.
Head coach Kris Knoblauch offered few details postgame, saying he was unsure how long Jarry might be out or how it could affect the team's upcoming schedule.

Why the Oilers could have trade talks with Buffalo as early as today

With Jarry's status uncertain, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman suggested the Oilers could reopen trade talks with the Sabres as early as today. Lyon carries a $1.5 million cap hit and is 7-6-3 this season with a 2.99 GAA and .904 save percentage.
"Edmonton's spoken about him, they've done their research on him. They looked into him again this season," Friedman said on the latest 32 Thoughts podcast. "They called the Sabres a couple times in recent weeks.

"It comes down to, is Buffalo ready to do this, and it also comes down to how seriously Jarry might be hurt. I wouldn't be surprised at all if Edmonton makes a call to Buffalo on Friday if they hadn't already."

Any move would require roster adjustments, as Edmonton has only $59,167 in cap space, according to Puckpedia, meaning a trade would need careful planning to fit under the salary cap.
