The Canucks have just acquired 23-year-old former first-rounder Lukas Reichel from the Blackhawks in exchange for a fourth-round pick in 2027. The Vancouver Canucks have acquired forward Lukas Reichel from the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for a 2027 fourth-round draft pick, in a trade that was completed on Friday.

Loading from Twitter ...

Loading from Twitter ...

Reichel, age 23, has two goals and two assists, for a total of four points in five games so far this season, his fifth campaign in Chicago. He had eight goals and 14 assists for 22 points in 70 games last season while playing an average of just 11:55 of ice time per game. Reichel is on a two-year, $2.4 million deal that pays him $1.2 million annually, and he is scheduled to become a restricted free agent at the end of this season, so he will require a new contract. It is not at all the return on investment that Chicago hoped for when they made Reichel the 17th overall pick of the 2020 draft.
Lukas Reichel averaged over a point-per-game in the AHL
Reichel made his NHL debut in 2022, amid a spectacular rookie season in the AHL that saw the German forward notch over a point per game. Reichel got a more extended look in Chicago's lineup the following season and looked like the future top-six player they hoped he'd be when they picked him in the first round. He turned in seven goals and 15 points through 23 games, a much better showing, averaging 16:22 of ice time per night and leading the team in points per game among players who finished the season. This trade is definitely a head-scratcher if you're a Blackhawks fan, and it makes you wonder why the team has given up on a player of his caliber so soon. What's their loss is Vancouver's gain.
