The Boston Bruins traded Jeffrey Viel to the Anaheim Ducks, banking a 2026 fourth-round pick in return.
It came down Friday from Don Sweeney, and it is a simple swap, player out, pick in.
The selection is the earlier of Anaheim's two 2026 fourths, one originally from Detroit and one from Philadelphia.
Jeffrey Viel is 28, undrafted, and he carved his way into the league the hard way after signing with San Jose in 2019.
The Bruins note he has 64 NHL games split between Boston and San Jose, with three goals and five points.
This season, his Bruins' minutes were the classic fourth-line, keep-it-honest shift, and he did plenty of the honest part.
Viel played 10 NHL games with Boston, posted zero points, and piled up 30 penalty minutes while averaging about nine and a half minutes a night.

From a fan angle, I like the cold logic here: Boston turns a depth forward into draft ammo without touching the core.
The same team release also included an emergency recall of defenseman Billy Sweezey from Providence, which hints at a short-term roster squeeze.
If you are Anaheim, the bet is easy to see: you get a big, left-shot winger who finishes checks and can live on the forecheck.
He is also cheap and flexible, carrying a $775,000 cap hit and hitting unrestricted free agency after this season.
For Boston, this is also about turning «replacement-level» into something you can package later, even if it is just a mid-round ticket.
Fourth-rounders are not glamour picks, but they are real currency at the deadline when you need to sweeten a deal.
One weird wrinkle: the Bruins say they now hold nine picks in the 2026 draft, but public trackers can lag right after a trade.
For example, Puckpedia's Bruins draft-picks page was still showing a different total on Friday, so I am sticking with the team's count for now.
Viel will not change either team's ceiling by himself, but these are the little moves that keep an organization nimble.
Now the next milestone is simple: watch how Boston uses that extra fourth, and whether Anaheim can squeeze a useful bottom-six role out of Viel down the stretch.
