The Jets are facing a similar contract stalemate and drama with Kyle Connor that the Oilers are facing with Connor McDavid, as per multiple reports surfacing. Rumors around the NHL suggest that the Winnipeg Jets could be headed for a contract conundrum similar to the recent ordeal between Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers. While it may work out for both teams in the end, the Jets have an immediate issue on their hands with their own star winger, Kyle Connor. Kyle Connor is not on Connor McDavid's level, as few players are, but he is a cornerstone for Winnipeg and a player the organization does not want to lose.
Connor Just had His Best NHL Season With the Jets
The 27-year-old just finished a career-best 97-point season and is heading into the final year of the seven-year, $50 million extension he signed in 2019. Like McDavid, he's going to be playing in a contract year unless a new deal is signed before the season begins. Here we sit, Kyle Connor: getting close to the start of training camp, not all that different than McDavid, Frank Seravalli stated on Insider Notebook. I don't think they've had much by way of extension talks. My understanding is that Connor's camp is not in very much of a rush get something done and that they want to evaluate their options. I'm sure Jets fans don't necessarily love the sound of that. Particularly after watching Nikolaj Ehlers walk out the door as a free agent.

Loading from Twitter ...

No club wants to have its top players entering a final contract year without security, and the Jets are no exception. Extending Connor on a long-term basis is a top priority, but to this juncture, there has been minimal indication that meaningful contract talks have begun. In Edmonton, McDavid's situation has been a timing issue more than a tension issue, as most around the league have expected an eventual signing. [McDavid's extension] could be anywhere from a two-year to an eight-year deal. I don't think that they've ruled out eight, Seravalli hinted. Four years might be the sweet spot here.

Loading from Twitter ...

That uncertainty, however, is indicative of the concern in Winnipeg: how many more years can these franchises keep their stars? For the Jets, the clock is already ticking on Connor. The same goes for Edmonton.
