Jakub Dobes became Lindy Ruff's target after Buffalo won Game 4, and the Sabres coach turned a 3-2 road win into a message.
Ruff's anger wasn't random. It was aimed at the next whistle, the next crease battle, and the next review in a series now tied 2-2.
The flashpoint was the disallowed-goal review. Ruff said he "totally" disagreed with it and argued Dobes initiates contact by swinging his stick around the crease.
That's not just venting. That's a coach trying to frame the standard before Game 5 in Buffalo on Thursday.
Dobes still did his job, stopping 19 of 22 shots and keeping Montreal close enough to push late.
"I totally disagree with."

Ruff then widened the complaint. He called some penalties light, but also admitted Buffalo created its own trouble.
That second part matters more inside the locker room. Ruff said the Sabres had talked about discipline the day before and still failed the test.
Ruff shifts from officiating frustration to a direct warning for his own bench. The second post is here:
"Some light calls. We didn't pass the discipline test."

Ruff can pressure officials publicly while still tightening his room privately.
Zach Benson's power-play goal stood as the winner, which makes Ruff's reaction sharper. Buffalo won, but its coach still treated the night like a problem to fix.
That's playoff management. Ruff didn't just complain after a win. He planted a crease narrative, challenged his players' discipline, and put Game 5's officiating under the microscope before puck drop.
