Samuel Blais hit waivers again as the Montreal Canadiens chase roster flexibility, and his 2025-26 season keeps getting yanked in two directions.

Elliotte Friedman reported Tuesday that Blais (MON) is back on waivers, with Montreal clearly trying to keep its roster chessboard moving.
Blais is 29, a 2014 sixth-round pick (176th overall) by the St. Louis Blues, and he signed a one-year deal with the Habs last summer worth $775,000.
This isn’t new territory for him this year, it’s becoming the story.
Back on October 5, Montreal placed him on waivers in the first place, hoping to slide him to Laval without drama.
Then October 6 happened, and Toronto claimed him before the ink could dry on the plan.
On top of Blais, three other players were also placed on waivers.
Blais actually got NHL run with the Leafs, eight games, three points (1-2-3), and a pretty clear identity as a straight-line, forecheck-first winger.
Even that didn’t keep him off the wire, because Toronto waived him again on November 26.
Montreal reclaimed him November 27 and routed him to the Laval Rocket, basically admitting the depth value was still worth holding onto.

Samuel Blais and the Montreal Canadiens roster squeeze

Honestly, it feels like Habs fans have whiplash with this guy, because every time he finds a lane, the waiver wire pops up again.
This newest waiver trip reads like a numbers game, not a total rejection.
Montreal has been juggling recalls, injuries, and lineup auditions all year, and Blais is one of the few pieces you can move without touching the kids.
The cap hit is small, but the roster spot is not, especially with the Habs trying to keep competition real in the bottom-six.
If he clears, Laval gets a proven pro who can play heavy minutes and keep prospects honest.
If he’s claimed, Montreal loses depth again, and the next call-up better be ready to handle NHL pace right away.
