The Blues are reportedly at a crossroads with RFA Philip Broberg, as contract talks have not yet begun, and he is set to be an RFA, prompting payback speculation.

Philip Broberg has been one of the few steady positives for the St. Louis Blues. Even with the team struggling in the standings, he has held up at five-on-five, logging heavy minutes and staying close to even in goal differential.
He continues to handle a large share of defensive-zone shifts while still producing offence, already reaching double-digit points.

What could be leading to contract extension delays

Broberg is also approaching the end of the offer-sheet contract he signed after leaving the Edmonton Oilers. Early projections suggested a moderate raise, but his performance this year has pushed expectations higher.
His value has climbed, and his usage reflects it. He is averaging longer shifts and carrying a workload he never received during his time in Edmonton, when he played limited minutes across 81 games.
A new storyline has emerged around him as well. The Blues are reportedly at a crossroads with Broberg because contract talks have not started, even though he is set to become a restricted free agent if unsigned.
"There's no rush with that," Blues general manager Doug Armstrong said in October, referring to contract talks with both Broberg and Holloway. "We're going to try and get them signed as quick as we can. If not, they're restricted free agents. We'll make sure that we leave enough space available to get those guys signed. The cap's going up. It's nice to know, with (other) guys signed, what we can do moving forward. And we can always create space."

Why many are starting to think the Oilers could offer sheet Philip Broberg

With discussions expected to begin later, but still no movement, it has led to speculation among fans that Edmonton could consider its own offer-sheet attempt as payback for losing him in the past.
That possibility has gained attention because of how important Broberg has become in St. Louis. His expanded role, his play-driving results, and the lack of early extension progress have all added to the conversation.
If the Blues delay negotiations much longer, questions about Broberg's future will only continue, and the Oilers-revenge storyline will remain in the background.
