Blackhawks Communications said Saturday that Troy Murray died at 63, ending a 45-year Chicago bond built through 688 games, a Selke and the radio booth.

The team post hit because it said exactly what fans felt, "We'll miss you, Muzz," and there was no softer way to frame it.
Murray was also a member of the Penguins and Jets 1.0 franchises.
Murray was not just a former player on alumni night. He was the Blackhawks, a third-round pick in 1980, 57th overall, who became the first player in franchise history to win the Selke Trophy in 1985-86.
His Chicago numbers still punch through the page, 197-291-488 in 688 games. His full NHL line finished at 230-354-584 across 915 games, with a Stanley Cup added in Colorado.
Then came the second act. More than two decades behind the mic turned Murray from respected ex-player into a nightly part of life for Blackhawks fans.
He stayed visible after revealing his cancer diagnosis in 2021, and his return to the radio booth that December said plenty about how stubbornly he loved the work.

Troy Murray gave the Chicago Blackhawks their voice

Around Chicago, this feels less like hockey news and more like losing the sound of winter itself.
That matters because fans trusted Murray's read of the game. He explained a bad breakout, a missed backcheck, or a broken penalty kill without sounding like he was performing for clips.
He also helped connect eras. Young players, old alumni, radio listeners and centennial-season fans all seemed to meet in the same place when Murray was around.
The Blackhawks are back in action Sunday, and the game will move on because hockey always does.
Still, this one lands heavier than a normal loss. When the puck drops again, Chicago will hear what is missing.
