Last offseason the Leafs underwent the most change the organization has seen in many years. The biggest change came when the team replaced Kyle Dubas with Brad Treliving. It seemed like it might be over for the core-four players but Treliving reassured fans when he signed Auston Matthews to a four-year contract extension. Now we know he's working on Nylander too.

NHL Insider Confirms Leafs And Nylander Are Negotiating Contract Extension

TSN insider Pierre LeBrun confirmed the Leafs and Nylander continue to negotiate a contract extension.
"The reality is, the dialogue is ongoing. My understanding is both sides keep going back and forth. They hope to get something done between now and July 1st, but it's a difficult contract to get done. William Nylander has been spectacular, his salary leverage keeps going up, but the Leafs, also, keep dealing with the salary cap."

He also explained why we have not heard anything from either side about the contract negotiations. According to LeBrun, both sides mutually agreed to not leak anything to the press. He also hinted that Leafs fans should not be afraid of Nylander signing somewhere else in the offseason.
"The thing about it is that it's been quiet by design. Both sides made a pact before the season started. They did not want any leaks whatsoever. Both sides want to be tight-lipped and that's exactly the way it's played out so far. And the reality is, if this thing had gone off the rails in terms of contract talks, you probably would be hearing more because you'd get some message sending from one side or the other."

Nylander Getting More Expensive As He Extends Point Streak

Nylander has hit another level this season. He leads the Leafs in scoring with 22 points. We are 15 games into the season and he has at least one point in all of them. It is a record-long point streak to open a season in Leafs history.
The hot streak could cost the Leafs millions of dollars if it continues. Right now he's making a case to earn 10 million a year at least on his next deal. Can the Leafs truly afford another eight-digit player, even with the rising cap? Only time will tell.
