The Edmonton Oilers are currently near the bottom of the Western Conference. A major issue in the eyes of many keeping the Oilers from being Stanley Cup contenders is the goaltending. A new set of rumors has said the Oilers are looking to fix the issue.
I am hearing two big names and both are interesting on differing levels....in Anaheim, Gibson and in St Louis, Binnington, have both been tied to the Oilers..
Despite the major names mentioned a source has said the Oilers have struggled to find a way to get teams to consider giving up stars.
"This is not an easy deal to make. They have been trying actually for over a week now and getting the numbers along with a no-trade of a player, who is NOT the main piece, has proven to be difficult...."
With these factors in mind which player makes the most sense to pair with the Oilers if a deal can be done?
Oilers Have A Difficult Choice To Make In Upgrading Their Goaltender
With both of these names in mind let's take a look at which player could provide a better solution.
Jordan Binnington has been on a bounce tear this season. In 13 appearances he has a 2.79 goals-against average and a 0.912 save percentage. These are his best numbers since his second full season in the NHL in 2020-21.
Gibson is also having his best year in a long time with a 2.43 goals-against average and a 0.921 save percentage. Gibson was once one of the best goalies in the league and a player with an incredibly bright future.
With both players being just 30 years of age either could be a good option for years to come in Edmonton. Binnington's fire and personality could provide a spark for the struggling Oilers. The upside of Gibson also provides an intriguing option.
