Oilers look to possibly give up a 100 plus point forward for a goalie

The start of the 2023-24 season has been a shaky one at best. The team fired their head coach Jay Woodcroft and assistant Dave Manson and have just looked out of sync with bad defense and goaltending that is not consistent. The team also does not have anyone in the minor leagues that can make a difference for this season.

So, GM Ken Holland will have to look elsewhere on the team to make an impact. That impact could come by trading one of the top forwards with the highest value, Ryan Nugent Hopkins.

Recently during an episode of Spittin Chiclets, former NHLers Paul Bissonnette and Ryan Whitney were tossing around ideas about what players can be sacrificed to fill in the gaps on defense and/or goaltending. Both feel that Nugent Hopkins' value can bring in players that can help where the team is lacking.

Nugent Hopkins is currently in the 3rd year of his 8-year contract worth $41 million. During the 2022-23 campaign he scored 104 points for the first time in his career.

He is a top center for most of the NHL teams in the league and would be a valuable asset to teams looking for a deep playoff run.

It is no guarantee that the Edmonton Oilers would even entertain the idea of trading Nugent Hopkins, but with the season nearing the quarter mark, the room for failure is getting less and less.
