The Calgary Flames had a rough season in 2022-23, and while they could be on the way up after moving on from Darryl Sutter behind the bench, but there's still hurdles to jump to become a competitive team.
A rising star

One piece the Flames do have to build around is Mackenzie Weegar, who joined the team in the Jonathan Huberdeau trade a year ago, and after being very outspoken this summer, he's becoming a fan favourite in Calgary. In 81 games a year ago, Weegar tallied 4 goals and 31 points, but found his groove in the back half of the season, and with Noah Hanifin likely to be moved, his role on the team will expand even more soon.
Playing in Calgary
However, despite the extensions for he and Huberdeau, not everyone wants to play north of the border, and even in Calgary specifically, and now, Weegar has opened up on that challenge of finding players that want to be there. There's lots of rumors of guys not wanting to be here or guys staying. To be honest, I kind of keep my head out of it and my nose out of it. I just want guys that want to be here. For me, the turnover, it doesn't really affect me. All that matters is the guys that want to be here and guys that want to win here in Calgary, and if you don't want to be a part of it, unfortunately, you have to move on even if they're great friends and great guys. For me, you want to win, and I think we want to win now. It starts with Craig and Husk at the helm. It's becoming clear that Calgary have a solid team going forward, but with six players heading for UFA status at the end of this upcoming season, it will become key for new GM Craig Conroy to find those players that want to be there and build a good young core for years to come.
