Mike McIntyre passed along Scott Arniel's update, and Neal Pionk's Friday contact test now drives Winnipeg's weekend roster squeeze.

Pionk, still on IR, is a 30-year-old right-shot defenceman with 2-6-8 in 40 games and a 22:47 average this season.
He is in year one of a six-year, $42 million deal with a $7 million cap hit through 2030-31.
That matters because Winnipeg does not just miss a body. It misses a clean first pass and calmer second-pair minutes.
Winnipeg has only 12 forwards available and wants to protect its last recalls.
That turns this into strategy, not housekeeping. One paper move today can cost flexibility on the next injury or back-to-back.
The wording itself tells the story, rehab optimism on one side, roster caution on the other.
"Neal Pionk will have full-contact practice Friday in Pittsburgh and could return this weekend."

- Scott Arniel
If Pionk clears contact Friday, Winnipeg can solve two problems at once, its blue line pace and its forward recall panic.

Neal Pionk changes Winnipeg Jets math

Fans should read this as a leverage update, not just a health update.
Pionk still handles hard minutes when healthy, and his return lets Josh Morrissey and Dylan DeMelo settle into cleaner matchups.
It also protects the penalty kill and keeps breakouts from dying on the wall when the right side gets thin.
Winnipeg has already played 67 games, so Arniel cannot treat recalls like free trial moves now.
If Pionk is cleared, Winnipeg buys structure without burning a forward move, and that is the kind of small edge that can save a week.
