Winnipeg Jets are right to delay recalls with Neal Pionk's return imminent

Mike McIntyre passed along Scott Arniel's update, and Neal Pionk's Friday contact test now drives Winnipeg's weekend roster squeeze.

Pionk, still on IR, is a 30-year-old right-shot defenceman with 2-6-8 in 40 games and a 22:47 average this season.

He is in year one of a six-year, $42 million deal with a $7 million cap hit through 2030-31.

That matters because Winnipeg does not just miss a body. It misses a clean first pass and calmer second-pair minutes.

Winnipeg has only 12 forwards available and wants to protect its last recalls.

That turns this into strategy, not housekeeping. One paper move today can cost flexibility on the next injury or back-to-back.

The wording itself tells the story, rehab optimism on one side, roster caution on the other.
