OilersNation raised it first, and Connor Ingram's $1.15 million cap hit now looks like Edmonton's smartest crease value before Florida arrives tonight.
Connor Ingram is playing on an expiring deal after Edmonton acquired him from Utah on October 1, with $800,000 retained from his original $1.95 million AAV. He becomes a UFA on July 1.
That matters because Tristan Jarry is already locked in at $5.375 million through 2027-28, and Edmonton cannot keep punting on the cheaper goalie if he keeps giving them cleaner nights.
This is not really about sentiment. It is about asset protection, cap layering, and whether Stan Bowman wants to shop for stability twice.
Ingram's line with Edmonton is modest, 11-6-2 with a 2.71 goals-against average and .895 save percentage, but it still tops Jarry's 16-9-2, 3.39 and .883.
The clip captures the mood in one sweep, and you can sense why the extension talk is getting louder now.
The fit is simple hockey. Ingram has looked calmer on first saves, quieter on rebounds, and less chaotic when Edmonton's blue line loses inside body position.
That changes the next game because the Oilers host the Florida Panthers on March 19, and every start now doubles as a playoff audition.
Connor Ingram is forcing Edmonton Oilers action
Fans are right to see this as a management test, not just a hot-hand debate.
If Bowman waits until June, the market can price Ingram above backup territory. If he moves sooner, Edmonton may still buy a useful two-year answer.
That is the strategic edge here. A modest extension protects roster flexibility while Jarry's bigger ticket keeps the front office pinned elsewhere.
Edmonton does not need a superhero every night. It needs the first stop, a settled crease, and one less roster problem heading into the spring.
Right now, Ingram looks less like insurance and more like the contract decision Edmonton cannot afford to drift on.
