NHL Player Safety gave Radko Gudas five games after Auston Matthews suffered a season-ending knee injury, and that number is why this story blew up.
NHL Public Relations announced the suspension on March 14 after Gudas was assessed a major and a game misconduct for kneeing Matthews. Matthews is out for the rest of the regular season with a grade 3 MCL tear and a quad contusion.
That is not a debate about optics. That is the league's own punishment scale colliding with the loss of one of its biggest stars.
Sportsnet reported player safety had become a front-burner issue at the GM meetings after the Gudas fallout. That matters more than any one angry quote.
The X post linked here claimed one NHL general manager told Gary Bettman the league has relaxed its standards on head shots. That exchange has not been publicly confirmed by the NHL.
You can almost hear the room turn when discipline stops sounding like policy and starts feeling like damage control.
Gary Bettman and the NHL have a trust problem
Fans are right to see this as more than one suspension.
When the punishment ends before the outrage does, the league loses the room. That is the real issue hanging over these meetings.
Bettman also said no rule changes were proposed during the meetings. In this case, that lands like a dodge, not stability.
The on-ice fit of tougher discipline is simple. It protects stars in traffic, cuts down on reckless contact, and gives teams a clearer line before the next playoff race turns nasty.
This is why that anonymous GM hit a nerve. He voiced a fear a lot of hockey people already had, and the league now has to prove him wrong.
